Surfer SEO Alternatives for Content Creators
Surfer SEO Alternatives for Content Creators: Frase, Clearscope and MarketMuse Compared
Surfer is a content optimization platform with a real-time Content Editor, keyword research and, on most of its plans, tracking of how AI assistants mention your brand. Its plans will not suit every creator's budget or way of working, so this article compares Surfer with three tools that sell similar content optimization features: Frase, Clearscope and MarketMuse. Every price, plan limit and feature below comes from the vendors' own pricing pages, product pages and help documentation, checked in October 2026. Prices and plans change often, so confirm them on each vendor's site before you subscribe.
A note on who is writing: williamreviews.com is the personal site of William Gyltman, who is co-founder and CMO of Rankad.ai, an AI visibility platform that now operates as Citera. Citera is a different kind of product from the content editors compared here, so it is described in its own section near the end and kept out of the comparison table.
What is Surfer and why consider alternatives?
Surfer, sold at surferseo.com, is a web platform for creating and optimizing content so that it ranks in Google and gets cited in AI answers. Reasons to compare it with alternatives include the entry price, the limits on the entry plan, whether AI tracking is included, and whether the tool fits the place where you already write.
At the heart of Surfer is the Content Editor. Surfer describes its Content Score as a real-time responsive metric based on more than 500 ranking factors, including keyword optimization, entity extraction and topic coverage. The guidelines come from what Surfer calls Organic Competitors: pages that rank in the top 10 of Google for the location you choose, plus the pages cited most in AI answers. The editor can be used in Google Docs through a Chrome extension, and Surfer also integrates with WordPress and Contentful. Content Editors can be shared with external writers without buying extra seats.
| Feature | Surfer | Frase | Clearscope | MarketMuse | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Lowest published price | $49 per month billed yearly (Discovery) | $39 per month billed yearly or $49 month to month (Starter) | $129 per month (Essentials) | Free plan; paid plan prices not published | | Users on the entry plan | 1 team seat (Discovery) | 1 seat and 1 site (Starter) | Unlimited users on every plan | 1 user (Free and Optimize) | | Free trial | 7 days of Pro; billing details required at checkout | 7 days; no credit card | 14 days | Free plan with 10 queries per month | | Content scoring | Content Score in the Content Editor | SEO and GEO scores | Content Grade, up to A++ | Optimize application with quality analysis | | AI search tracking | 25 to 100 prompts on AI Search Analytics, Standard, Pro and Peace of Mind; none on Discovery | AI Visibility on every plan; Starter covers ChatGPT and Google AI | Query tracking across ChatGPT and Gemini on every plan | Not listed on its pricing page | | Works with | WordPress, Google Docs, Contentful and Zapier | Publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity and Wix; MCP server and CLI | Google Docs, WordPress and Microsoft Word | Briefs export to Google Docs or MS Word |
What does each Surfer plan include?
- Discovery: $49 per month billed yearly, 120 documents, 10 tracked pages, 1 team seat and no AI prompt tracking.
- AI Search Analytics: $82 per month billed yearly, 50 AI prompts refreshed daily and 5 brand workspaces, with no content documents listed.
- Standard: $99 per month billed yearly, 360 documents, 25 AI prompts refreshed weekly and 3 team seats.
- Pro: $182 per month billed yearly, 360 documents, 50 AI prompts refreshed daily and 5 team seats.
- Peace of Mind: $299 per month billed yearly, 100 AI prompts refreshed daily, unlimited documents under a fair usage policy and API access.
- Enterprise: custom pricing, with SSO and custom limits.
Surfer's prices above are for annual billing. Its pricing FAQ says the annual plan gives a discount of up to 17% compared with paying monthly, and that credits on an annual plan reset yearly. New accounts can try the Pro plan free for 7 days, but Surfer's help center says you enter billing details at checkout and the subscription converts to the plan you selected unless you cancel before the week ends. For a solo writer, the practical point is that the cheapest plan, Discovery, covers writing and optimization but tracks no AI prompts. AI visibility tracking starts with AI Search Analytics at $82 or Standard at $99 per month billed yearly.
How does MarketMuse compare to Surfer?
MarketMuse focuses on content planning and research across a whole site, and unlike Surfer it does not publish prices for its paid plans. MarketMuse describes its strength as helping you understand what to write and how much, how to build on the authority you already have, and how to identify low-quality content. Its pricing page lists four plans, Free, Optimize, Research and Strategy, and asks you to book a demo for paid pricing.
According to its home page, MarketMuse's patented AI analyzes your entire content inventory, then pinpoints high-value topic clusters and finds quick wins based on your existing authority. The features it lists include competitive content analysis, content clusters, content planning, a Content Brief Generator and the Optimize application, which covers brief optimization, link recommendations and quality analysis. MarketMuse says it uses patented topic modeling technology rather than TF-IDF or correlation SEO. It also says Optimize has a generative AI component to help you create content faster, but that it does not write content for its customers.
Content briefs are the feature most relevant to creators who hand work to other writers. MarketMuse says its briefs give writers the structure, related topics, questions to answer and linking suggestions they need, and that briefs come in types such as how-to, listicle, comparison and product review. Briefs can be exported to Google Docs or MS Word. The number of briefs depends on the plan: none on Free, 5 per month on Optimize, 10 on Research and 20 on Strategy.
For an individual creator, the Free plan is the place to start: MarketMuse describes it as best for individuals with a low content volume, with 1 user and 10 queries per month. Optimize is described as best for individuals publishing content regularly and adds 1 site inventory, 100 tracked topics, 5 briefs and 1 strategy document per month. Research, with 3 users and unlimited queries, is aimed at teams, and Strategy, with 5 users, at large teams and agencies. Because paid prices are only given through a demo, you cannot compare MarketMuse's cost with Surfer's from public information.
What are the key details about MarketMuse?
- Plans: Free, Optimize, Research and Strategy; paid prices are not published.
- Free plan: 1 user and 10 queries per month, with no content briefs.
- Content briefs: 5, 10 or 20 per month on the paid plans.
- Briefs export to Google Docs or MS Word.
- MarketMuse says it is most often used by brands, publishers and agencies.
Is Frase a good alternative to Surfer?
For a solo creator on a budget, Frase is the closest match: its Starter plan is aimed at solos, freelancers and single-site teams and costs less than Surfer's cheapest plan when both are billed yearly. Frase lists features for the same steps as Surfer, from research and briefs to drafting, optimization and AI visibility tracking, and adds publishing to several content management systems.
Frase's Starter plan costs $39 per month billed yearly or $49 month to month, and includes 1 seat, 1 site, 10 articles and 50 audit pages each month, SEO and GEO scores, and AI Visibility on ChatGPT and Google AI. Professional costs $103 per month billed yearly or $129 month to month and adds 3 seats, 5 sites, 40 articles a month, a content calendar, internal linking suggestions and Perplexity tracking. Scale costs $239 per month billed yearly or $299 month to month and is aimed at agencies and multi-site brands. Every plan comes with a free 7-day trial that needs no credit card.
Frase describes its features step by step. SEO Research is content research that ends in a brief, Topic Clusters maps the cluster around a topic, the AI Agent drafts with your brand in context, and Brand Voice keeps drafts sounding like you. Content Optimization scores pages for Google, GEO Optimization tunes content to get cited by AI, and AI Visibility monitors where AI search cites you. Finished posts can be pushed to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity or Wix, or hosted on Frase's own FraseCMS, and Frase can be used from tools such as Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor through its MCP server and CLI on every plan.
One detail matters for creators who watch costs: Frase says Starter simply stops at its monthly limits, so a surprise bill is off the table. On Professional and Scale, pay-as-you-go is optional and off by default. If you switch it on, Professional charges $5 per extra article, $0.50 per audit page and $0.25 per AI prompt. Yearly billing takes 20% off the monthly price.
What are the key details about Frase?
- Starter: $39 per month billed yearly, or $49 month to month.
- Free 7-day trial on every plan, with no credit card.
- Starter covers 1 seat, 1 site and 10 articles a month.
- AI Visibility on ChatGPT and Google AI from the Starter plan.
- Publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity and Wix.
Why is Outranking not included in this comparison?
Because its own website did not show what it currently sells. Outranking's site title describes it as SEO content writing AI software and optimization tools, but when outranking.io was checked in October 2026, its home page, pricing page and feature pages all returned the same page with a title and no plans, prices or feature descriptions. Third-party listings give prices that disagree with each other, so rather than repeat them, this article leaves Outranking out. If its site comes back with current plans, it can be compared in the same way as the others.
What features make Clearscope a viable alternative?
Clearscope combines detailed term guidance in its editor with AI visibility tracking, at a higher entry price: its Essentials plan costs $129 per month, against $49 per month billed yearly for Surfer's Discovery plan. Every Clearscope plan includes unlimited users and projects, and new accounts get a 14 day free trial.
The Clearscope Editor grades a draft as you write. Its support documentation describes the Content Grade as a real-time indicator of how well your content covers the topic and addresses user intent, measured against the analyzed top-ranking content, with A++ as the highest grade. The grade rises as you use more of the suggested terms, a list of recommended entities, concepts and ideas that is sorted by importance and can be re-sorted to show unused terms or terms that appear in AI-generated responses. The editor also shows the heading outlines of the top 30 pages ranking for your query, where competitors rank on desktop and mobile, and a term map of how each of those pages uses the recommended terms.
Clearscope integrates with Google Docs, WordPress and Microsoft Word, so the real-time scoring is available where many writers already work. Beyond the editor, Clearscope's home page describes Query Tracking, which shows where a brand is mentioned across ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude and where competitors are recommended instead, and Query Discovery, which takes a topic or website URL and surfaces the queries that generate traffic and attention across Google, Gemini, GPT and Claude. The pricing page lists query tracking across ChatGPT and Gemini in every plan.
Essentials includes 50 tracked queries, 50 pages, 20 topic explorations and 20 drafts per month. Business costs $399 per month and includes 300 tracked queries, 300 pages, 50 topic explorations and 20 drafts per month, plus a dedicated account manager. Enterprise is priced individually and adds custom credits, custom agreements and single sign-on. Clearscope's pricing page says there are no contracts and no hidden costs.
What are the key details about Clearscope?
- Essentials: $129 per month; Business: $399 per month; Enterprise: custom.
- Unlimited users and projects on every plan.
- Content Grade up to A++, measured against top-ranking content.
- Integrates with Google Docs, WordPress and Microsoft Word.
- Query tracking across ChatGPT and Gemini on every plan.
How do the prices compare for a solo creator?
On published prices, Frase has the lowest paid entry point, Surfer comes next and Clearscope costs the most, while MarketMuse offers a free plan but does not publish paid prices. What each entry plan includes matters as much as the price, because the limits and AI tracking differ.
Billed yearly, Frase Starter costs $39 per month and Surfer Discovery $49. Paid month to month, Frase Starter costs $49. Clearscope Essentials costs $129 per month. Frase Starter allows 10 articles a month. Surfer Discovery includes 120 documents, and because credits on Surfer's annual plans reset yearly, it is worth checking whether that allowance covers a year of your publishing. Clearscope Essentials includes 20 drafts and 50 tracked queries a month.
If tracking AI answers matters to you, the entry plans differ more than the prices suggest. Surfer Discovery tracks no AI prompts, Frase Starter includes AI Visibility on ChatGPT and Google AI, and Clearscope Essentials includes query tracking across ChatGPT and Gemini. MarketMuse does not list AI search tracking on its pricing page.
Which prices and limits should you compare?
- Frase Starter: $39 per month billed yearly, 10 articles a month, AI Visibility included.
- Surfer Discovery: $49 per month billed yearly, 120 documents, no AI prompt tracking.
- Clearscope Essentials: $129 per month, 20 drafts and 50 tracked queries a month.
- MarketMuse Free: 1 user and 10 queries a month; paid prices on request.
What factors should content creators consider when choosing an SEO tool?
Start with how you work rather than with the feature list: where you write, how many pieces you publish each month, whether you work alone or with an editor, and whether you need to track AI answers as well as Google rankings. Then compare plan limits and trial terms, which differ more between these tools than the headline features do.
Budget comes first for most solo creators, so compare the price you will actually pay. Annual billing lowers the monthly price at both Surfer and Frase, but it is billed once a year. Check what happens when you reach a limit: Frase Starter stops at its monthly limits, while credits on Surfer's annual plans reset once a year. A tool that looks cheaper per month can cost more if its limits push you onto a higher plan.
Next, look at where you write. If you draft in Google Docs, Surfer and Clearscope both work there, Surfer through a Chrome extension and Clearscope through an integration, and MarketMuse briefs can be exported to Google Docs. If you publish on WordPress, Surfer, Clearscope and Frase all list it. If your site runs on Webflow, Sanity or Wix, Frase lists those as publishing targets.
Team size changes the sums. Clearscope includes unlimited users on every plan. Surfer Discovery and Frase Starter include 1 seat each; Surfer Standard has 3 team seats, and Frase Professional has 3 seats with extra seats at $29 per month. If you work with freelance writers, Surfer lets you share Content Editors with external writers without extra seats, and MarketMuse briefs can be handed over as documents.
Finally, use the trials on a real article. Frase's 7-day trial needs no credit card and is capped at 5 articles, 50 audit pages and 25 AI prompts. Surfer's 7-day Pro trial converts to a paid plan unless you cancel. Clearscope offers a 14 day free trial. Running the same topic through each tool and comparing the guidance is a better test than any vendor's claims or reviewer's verdict, including this one.
Which questions should you answer before you choose?
- How many articles will you publish each month?
- Do you write in Google Docs, WordPress or somewhere else?
- Do you need AI answer tracking, or only Google optimization?
- Will anyone else need a seat or access to your drafts?
- Can you test the tool on a real article during the trial?
What can these tools do for AI search visibility?
They can show whether AI assistants mention you and suggest changes to your content, but they cannot make a search engine cite you. Google's own documentation says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary. To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.
That means the basics still come first. For its AI features, Google points to ordinary SEO fundamentals: allow crawling in robots.txt and by any CDN or hosting infrastructure, make content easy to find through internal links, provide a good page experience, keep important content in text form, support it with high-quality images and videos where relevant, and make sure structured data matches the visible text. Google adds that you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup, and that there is no special schema.org structured data to add.
If you use the AI writing features these tools include, Google's guidance on generative AI content applies. It warns that using generative AI tools to generate many pages without adding value for users may violate its spam policy on scaled content abuse. It also says it is critical to manually fact-check and review all AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing, and that this review covers metadata such as title elements, meta descriptions, structured data and image alt text.
Where the tools help is measurement. Surfer (on every plan except Discovery), Frase and Clearscope all track prompts or queries in AI assistants. The amounts differ: Surfer tracks 25 to 100 prompts depending on the plan, Frase Starter tracks 50 AI Visibility prompts, and Clearscope Essentials tracks 50 queries. MarketMuse's pricing page does not list AI search tracking.
Each tool only checks the prompts or queries you set up, so the results are only as useful as the questions you choose. Pick questions your readers would actually ask, and use the results to find topics you are not mentioned for, rather than as a score to chase.
What does the official guidance say?
- Google: no special optimization is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- Google: a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to be shown as a supporting link.
- Google: no AI text files, special markup or special schema.org structured data are required.
- Google: fact-check AI-generated content, including metadata, before publishing.
- Google: many pages generated without added value may count as scaled content abuse.
Where does Citera fit, and why is it in a separate section?
Citera is made by Rankad AB, the company behind Rankad.ai, where this site's owner William Gyltman is co-founder and CMO; rankad.ai now redirects to citeralabs.ai. It is described here separately, and kept out of the table, because the author has a stake in it and because it is a different kind of product from the editors above.
Citera is not a writing editor. Its site describes it as a tool that grows organic traffic and revenue across Google and AI search by creating, optimizing and distributing content, with an autopilot AI agent, tracking across Google, AI models and AI Overviews, a technical audit, a content calendar with automated posting, and competitor insight at prompt and citation level. The site pitches it to businesses that want to be recommended by Google, ChatGPT and other AI models without needing an SEO team, rather than to writers looking for guidance while they draft.
Prices on citeralabs.ai are in euros per month. Starter has a regular price of €199 and covers 1 brand and 25 prompts a month with weekly scans. Scale has a regular price of €399 and covers 3 brands and 50 prompts a month with scans every 2 days. Custom is priced individually. When the site was checked in October 2026, both plans had discounts for the first 3 months, and all plans came with a 90-day money-back guarantee.
What are the key details about Citera?
- Made by Rankad AB; this site's owner is its co-founder and CMO.
- Works on visibility in Google and AI assistants, not on drafting in an editor.
- Regular prices: Starter €199 and Scale €399 per month.
- 90-day money-back guarantee on all plans.
What is the main benefit of using Surfer?
Its Content Editor gives real-time guidance while you write, based on pages that rank in the top 10 of Google for your query and pages cited in AI answers. Most plans also track how AI assistants mention your brand, although the entry-level Discovery plan does not.
What is Williamreviews?
It is the personal site of William Gyltman, with a blog and reviews of software, AI tools and business solutions. It does not sell an SEO tool. William Gyltman is co-founder and CMO of Rankad.ai, which now operates as Citera.
Is MarketMuse suitable for individual bloggers?
It can be. MarketMuse has a free plan it describes as best for individuals with a low content volume, with 1 user and 10 queries per month, and an Optimize plan it describes as best for individuals publishing content regularly. Paid prices are not published, so you need to book a demo to find out what Optimize costs.
Can Frase replace Surfer?
Frase lists features for the same steps as Surfer: research and briefs, AI drafting, content scoring for Google and AI search, and AI visibility tracking. Whether it can replace Surfer for you depends on which guidance you find more useful, so test both on the same article during their 7-day trials.
Which of these tools costs the least for a solo creator?
On published prices, Frase Starter at $39 per month billed yearly, or $49 month to month, is the lowest paid entry point. Surfer Discovery costs $49 per month billed yearly and Clearscope Essentials $129 per month. MarketMuse has a free plan but does not publish paid prices.
Are AI visibility tools worth the investment for bloggers?
It depends on whether you will act on what they show. Google says no special optimization is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, so no tool can promise citations. The tools are useful for seeing which questions you are or are not mentioned for, and for checking drafts against the pages that already rank.
